MOM2MOM: Cavell Students Spreading the Real Meaning of the Holidays

When you think of the winter holidays, your mind probably goes straight towards whatever

holiday you celebrate, that most likely consists of gifts, delicious food, family, friends, and parties. All of those things are important and fun but, what about giving, the concept these celebrations are based around? I imagine you bring in your cans to put under the christmas tree at school and give relatives a variety of treats. Unfortunately, that’s not an option for over half a million British Columbians who live under the poverty line. 87,000 of those people are children and 22.9% of families in BC are part of this quintile. The majority of this large portion of our population, aren’t homeless and are employed, making up to $610 a month, minus all their basic needs. These are the circumstances that the 7 single parent families that Cavell is sponsoring, have to try and manage. Each class has two families’ wishlist that they will try and fulfill with their buddy class. These wishlists have simple essentials like, clothes, gift cards to grocery stores, umbrellas, and shower curtains. They also include treats like, heated socks, bath salts, books, games, and toys. The best thing is you almost feel like you know the people you’re donating too! I’m definitely pleased to say that within 2 weeks each class donated at least 2 huge IKEA bags full of things to their assigned family. Today, Division 2 successfully sorted and stuffed 3 vans with your donations, that are now being delivered to those families. We should be very proud Cavell! We successfully gave back and made 7 hardworking families’ holiday season. Go Cougars!
